The Gherkin Meets Ground

Buildings, Landmarks, My work

This is the base of the Gherkin, the iconic curvy skyscraper in London that features in every establishing shot of London ever.  You don’t often get to see where the building connects to the earth, but when I went there I was taken aback by the sheer scale of the place.  You can see here only a few of the lower floors, and the people and the truck provide a good reference for scale.

It is bizarre for me coming from Manchester – a large, spread out, post-industrial city – to find places where so little of the sky is visible.
